Egypt foreign reserves rise to record $57.2 billion

CAIRO, EGYPT / RankWire.AI / – Egypt’s net international reserves reached a record $57.2145 billion at the end of August 2026. The Central Bank of Egypt reported the provisional figure on September 7. Reserves had stood at $56.2939 billion at the end of July. The monthly increase came to about $920.6 million, or 1.6%. The latest total marks the first time Egypt’s official reserve holdings have moved above $57 billion.

The August reading also extended a steady rise recorded throughout 2026. Egypt started the year with reserves of $52.5938 billion in January. The total increased to $52.7455 billion in February and $52.8306 billion in March. It then reached $53.0092 billion in April and $53.1342 billion in May. By August, reserves had risen about $4.62 billion from January and roughly $5.76 billion from the end of December 2025.

Growth accelerated during the middle of the year. Reserves rose from $53.1342 billion in May to $55.0723 billion in June. They advanced again to $56.2939 billion in July before reaching the August record. Those three monthly gains added more than $4 billion to the reserve total. Compared with August 2025, the latest figure was about $7.96 billion higher. That equals annual growth of roughly 16.2%.

Remittances add to foreign currency inflows

Remittances from Egyptians working abroad also reached a record during the 2025/2026 fiscal year. The Central Bank of Egypt said those inflows totaled about $47.3 billion. That compared with roughly $36.5 billion in the previous fiscal year, an increase of 29.6%. June remittances alone reached about $4.2 billion. The monthly figure was 15.6% higher than the approximately $3.6 billion recorded in June 2025.

Egypt’s latest balance of payments data cover the first nine months of fiscal year 2025/2026. The overall balance recorded a deficit of $1.8 billion during the July to March period. The capital and financial account posted net inflows of $9.9 billion. The current account registered a deficit of $14.6 billion. These figures provide the latest official picture of Egypt’s external accounts before the August reserve update.

Monthly reserve records continue in 2026

The reserve series has reached successive nominal highs during the year. Holdings crossed $55 billion in June and then moved above $56 billion in July. August brought the first reading above $57 billion. Egypt has now posted three consecutive month-end reserve totals above $55 billion. The August level also stands more than one-tenth above the $51.4516 billion recorded at the end of December 2025.

The latest data place Egypt’s net international reserves at their highest reported level on record. They also extend an uninterrupted monthly increase since the start of 2026. From January through August, every monthly reading exceeded the previous month’s total. The August figure remains provisional under the central bank’s reporting format. Even so, the published data show a clear rise in Egypt’s reserve stock across the first eight months of the year.
