BUSAN, SOUTH KOREA / RankWire.AI / – A South Korean container ship has left Busan for Europe on the country’s first Arctic trial involving commercial container cargo. PanStar Acro departed Busan New Port on August 22 for a planned 45-day round trip. The 2,758-TEU vessel will travel through the Northern Sea Route before reaching European ports. South Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries set October 5 as the expected return date to Busan.
The ship is carrying 837 TEU during the voyage, including 737 TEU of commercial freight. Its cargo includes chemical products, used vehicles and automotive components, along with 100 empty containers. PanStar Line operates the vessel and is conducting the trial with government support. The ship is due to enter Arctic waters around August 30. Its Arctic segment covers about 6,400 kilometers and should end around September 7 under the published schedule.
After clearing the Arctic section, PanStar Acro will continue to three scheduled European ports. Felixstowe in Britain is first on September 9, followed by Rotterdam on September 11. The vessel is scheduled to reach Gdansk on September 15. It will then begin its return journey toward South Korea through the same northern corridor. The planned Busan-to-Rotterdam route spans about 13,000 kilometers, compared with roughly 20,000 kilometers through the Suez Canal.
Commercial cargo puts Arctic route to test
South Korean authorities prepared the vessel and crew for the conditions expected during the northern passage. Navigation officers completed training for operations in polar waters before departure. An experienced polar navigator joined the ship as chief officer after serving aboard the Araon icebreaking research vessel. Organizers also addressed insurance, emergency procedures and international administrative requirements. A round-the-clock communications system will support contact with the vessel throughout the Arctic portion of the trip.
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries will use the voyage to collect operating information from a working container ship. The trial will record sailing distance, transit time, fuel use and operating expenses. It will also gather data on cargo demand and practical requirements for Arctic container transport. South Korean shipping companies have used Arctic routes with other vessel types before. However, this voyage marks the country’s first container ship trial on the route and its first Korean Arctic shipping operation since 2016.
Officials track costs, timing and operations
Preparations began earlier in 2026 through a public-private council focused on Arctic shipping. Organizers selected the participating carrier through a public competition in May. PanStar Line then completed work on vessel readiness, cargo arrangements and crew planning before departure. Preparations also covered insurance, emergency response measures and navigation requirements for Arctic waters. The ship is carrying paying commercial cargo during the trial rather than sailing as an empty demonstration vessel.
Officials classify the journey as a trial operation, not a regular Arctic container service. The round trip will provide a full set of operational figures from departure through the vessel’s scheduled return. European port calls will combine commercial cargo movements with the wider navigation test. PanStar Acro is scheduled to return to Busan New Port around October 5. The arrival would complete the planned 45-day voyage linking South Korea and Europe through the Northern Sea Route.
